Post-Dental Extractions Care: Tips for a Speedy Recovery

At Riyo Dental, we understand that undergoing dental extractions can be a daunting experience. Whether it’s a wisdom tooth removal or a necessary extraction due to decay, taking the right steps during your recovery is crucial for a smooth healing process. Our team of dental hygienists and general dentistry experts is here to guide you through post-extraction care to ensure a speedy recovery.

Follow Your Dentist’s Instructions

Your dentist will provide specific aftercare instructions tailored to your procedure. It’s vital to follow these guidelines closely. This may include medication prescriptions, dietary restrictions and information on when to resume normal activities. Adhering to your dentist’s advice can significantly affect your recovery speed and overall comfort.

Manage Bleeding and Swelling

It’s normal to experience some bleeding after dental extractions. Bite down gently on a gauze pad placed over the extraction site for about 30 to 45 minutes to help stop the bleeding. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a fresh piece and continue to apply gentle pressure.

Swelling can also occur, typically peaking within 48 hours. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time during the first day. This can help minimise discomfort and promote healing.

Stick to Soft Foods and Stay Hydrated

After dental extractions, it’s best to stick to soft foods for the first few days. Foods like mashed potatoes, smoothies and yoghurt are gentle on the extraction site. Avoid crunchy, hot or spicy foods, as these can irritate the area. Additionally, staying hydrated is important, but be cautious with straws, as sucking can dislodge the blood clot that forms over the extraction site.

Pain Management

Discomfort is a common part of recovery, but managing pain effectively can help you feel better. Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, can be beneficial. However, follow your dentist’s recommendations regarding which medications to take and the proper dosage. If you experience severe pain that isn’t relieved by medication, contact us at Riyo Dental.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Good dental hygiene is essential, even after dental extractions. Avoid brushing the extraction site directly for the first 24 hours, but you can gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep the area clean. This can also help prevent infection. After a day, you may resume gentle brushing of your teeth, but be careful around the extraction area.

Follow Up with Your Dental Hygienist

To ensure proper healing, it’s important to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments. Our dental hygienists at Riyo Dental can monitor your recovery and address any concerns. Regular check-ups are a key part of general dentistry, helping maintain your oral health long after the extraction.
