5 Simple Tips on How to Overcome Dental Anxiety

Here at Riyo Dental, it’s our mission to help all of our patients feel relaxed and comfortable when they visit us. But with 53% of the UK population afraid of going to the dentist, it’s safe to say we have our work cut out for us! If you’re one of those people, know that you’re not alone and we’ll do everything we can to change your perception of what it means to go to a dental clinic.

While we appreciate overcoming dental anxiety isn’t a quick fix, there are certain things you can do to put yourself at ease before your next appointment. Here are our top five tips.

1.  Find the Right Dentist

The right dental clinic can make all the difference to your dental experience. Look for a dental practice that has:

  • Friendly, caring staff
  • Great reviews from patients
  • A relaxed clinic atmosphere
  • Simple answers to all of your questions

Not only will the right dentist be able to put you at ease, but you’ll also feel more assured about the care you’re receiving.

2.  Use Relaxation Techniques

It can be difficult to get out of your head when you’re anxious, but sometimes taking the time to put yourself in the right mindset ahead of your appointment can make you feel more at ease. Many people find it helpful to do stretches, meditation or deep breathing.

3.  Bring a Friend

Ask a family member or friend to join you at your appointment. Whether you want them to sit in the waiting room during your appointment or come into the room with you, having a supportive familiar face by your side can help you feel safer and more comfortable.

4.  Arrive Early

Rushing to get to your appointment on time doesn’t help with feelings of anxiety that you’re experiencing. Don’t put unnecessary stress on the situation; instead, plan to arrive early to give yourself enough time to get acclimated. You can use this extra time to speak to reception staff, ask questions or simply relax in a calm environment.

5.  Make Your Dentist Aware

While it’s unfortunate that dental anxiety is so common, it does mean that your dentist will likely have tons of experience helping people with the same fears as you. So, don’t bottle your anxiety up – be sure to let the team at your dental clinic know that you’re feeling nervous.

They want to provide the personalised care necessary to help you have a relaxed experience, so be sure to voice any concerns, questions or discomfort. Want to know what will happen during a specific treatment or what a certain instrument does? Just ask! Feeling anxious and need a moment before continuing? Let them know.
