Dental Extractions: When Are They Necessary & What to Expect

Dental extractions are one of the most commonly performed procedures in general dentistry. While no one likes the thought of having a tooth removed, there are times when it becomes necessary for the sake of your oral health. Whether you’re experiencing decay, overcrowding, or trauma, understanding when dental extractions are needed and what to expect during the procedure can help alleviate any anxiety you may have.

When Are Dental Extractions Necessary?

A dental extraction may be required for several reasons. Here are some of the most common circumstances in which a dentist may recommend this procedure:

Severe Tooth Decay or Infection

If a tooth is severely decayed or infected and cannot be saved through a filling or root canal treatment, an extraction might be the only option. When tooth decay reaches the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth), it can cause intense pain and infection that may spread to other areas of your mouth.

Overcrowding

Overcrowding occurs when there isn’t enough space in the mouth for all the teeth to fit properly. This often happens when the mouth is too small for the size of the teeth or when there are extra teeth. Dental extractions are often recommended before orthodontic treatment (such as braces) to make space for your teeth to align correctly.

Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can cause the gums to recede, causing teeth to become loose. If the damage is extensive, extracting the affected teeth may be the best solution to prevent further complications.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are often extracted because they can become impacted (stuck beneath the gumline) and cause discomfort or infection. In some cases, they may not fully emerge, leading to infection, swelling, and damage to neighbouring teeth.

Trauma or Injury

A broken or damaged tooth from an accident or trauma may require extraction if the tooth cannot be restored with other dental treatments. Your dentist will assess the damage and make the best recommendation.

What to Expect During a Dental Extraction

A tooth extraction can be quite daunting, especially if you don’t know what to expect.

  • Anaesthesia – Before the extraction begins, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth using a local anaesthetic so that you don’t feel any pain.
  • The Extraction Process – The dentist will carefully loosen the tooth from its socket using special instruments. In some cases, the tooth may need to be sectioned into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.
  • Post-Extraction Care – After the extraction, your dentist will provide instructions on how to care for the extraction site. It’s important to follow these instructions closely to ensure proper healing and reduce the risk of complications.
  • Healing and Recovery – Most patients experience some swelling and discomfort following the extraction, but this typically resolves within a few days. The gum will heal naturally, and any stitches used during the procedure will dissolve on their own.
